The Ulster Wildlife Trust continues to administer the Landfill Communities Fund for several local councils and private landfill operators. The fund is open to various groups across Northern Ireland to apply for funding for a variety of environmental projects.
The Landfill Communities Fund (LCF)
For each tonne of waste disposed in a Landfill site a tax is paid. The Landfill Community Fund allows the Operator of the landfill site to pay 6% of this tax to organisations called ‘Environmental Bodies’ (EBs). This money can be used to fund community and environmental projects that comply with the objects contained in the Landfill Tax Regulations.
The Government saw the LCF as a way for Landfill Operators (LOs) and EBs to work in partnership to create significant environmental benefits and jobs and to undertake projects which improve the lives of communities living near landfill sites.
ENTRUST
All distributors of the LCF are regulated by ENTRUST on behalf of HM Customs and Revenue.The Ulster Wildlife Trust is required to submit all project applications to ENTRUST for registration.
ENTRUST is responsible for ensuring EBs comply with the regulations. An approved scheme has to be registered with ENTRUST and must be undertaken through an approved EB. ENTRUST charge an administration fee for this service.
Criteria for applying
When making an application for Landfill Communities Funding, projects must:
- satisfy the criteria of the Ulster Wildlife Trust
- satisfy the criteria of ENTRUST
- have a community benefit
- have a positive environmental benefit
- have clear aims and objectives
- command the necessary resources to complete the project
Am I eligible?
Project applicants must:
Be a constituted body with auditable accounts
Have sufficient cash flow to begin the project
Projects must:
Be eligible under one of ENTRUSTs six Object Categories, further infomation can be found here.
Be within the vicinity of a landfill
