Visiting our Nature Reserves

Explore our nature reservesAs well as protecting a diverse range of quality habitats, the nature reserves serve as examples to other landowners of best practice in managing land for wildlife. The majority provide opportunities for informal recreation, though for all our nature reserves wildlife protection takes priority.

When you visit our nature reserves, expect a close encounter with nature and a real taste of the countryside, rather than a stroll in a landscaped country park. Grazing animals are often used as a conservation tool, so be aware that at certain times of year livestock may be present in or around the sites. Come prepared with sensible clothing and footwear. Please respect any measures we have in place to minimise disturbance to wildlife, and take litter away with you – leave only footprints!

Ecos, Slievenacloy, Bog Meadows and Lagan Meadows offer good quality surfaced footpaths, often with a combination of informal paths, and several interesting walking routes. Interpretive signage, picnic areas and car parking facilities are additional features on some nature reserves.

Attending events such as guided walks is often best way to fully appreciate the reserves. It also provides an opportunity to visit reserves with restricted access. We hope you enjoy our nature reserves and we welcome your comments and feedback.
